Sohee Baek is a London-based South Korean composer who is passionate about storytelling through music. She began her musical journey studying Composition at Chung-Ang University in Korea, and recently completed a Master’s degree in Composition (Electronic Music) with Distinction at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, fully funded by the prestigious Korean Government Scholarship for Overseas Study from 2023 to 2025.

Her compositions are influenced by the colour and atmosphere of French Impressionist music, particularly the works of Ravel and Debussy. Inspired by this, she began writing music for stories, including novels and poetry, exploring how music can depict intangible elements such as emotions and memory while developing her own musical identity. This developed into a strong passion for film music, where she seeks to capture and create aspects of a film’s aesthetic and narrative that cannot be expressed by the screen alone.

More recently, Sohee served as curator, music director, and composer for a collaborative Korean traditional music project supported by the Guildhall School. Through this project, she began exploring the space between Korean traditional music and Western classical music, incorporating both acoustic instruments and electronic sounds into her work.

As a composer, Sohee has received recognition from prestigious institutions and film festivals, including Vienna Shorts and London International Anination Festival. She was selected as a composer for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Film Composers Lab and Rachel Portman’s Film Music Mentorship Programme with the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, she was also selected as Korea’s representative composer for the 49th Pan Music Festival, organised by the International Society for Contemporary Music.

Alongside her composition career, Sohee has worked as a piano accompanist in churches, choirs, musical theatre, and schools for over 10 years. Since 2024, she has been a pianist for the Mixed-Up Chorus, developing her experience and insight into community music-making. She is passionate about nurturing young musicians through piano and composition teaching, helping them develop both their musical skills and creativity.
